Factors affecting the life satisfaction for permanent colostomy patients & its implication for social work intervention

Abstract
This paper examines what kind of factors directly influence the life satisfaction for permanent colostomy patients, thereby trying to help them to experience less problems when adjusting to the community rehabilitation. Data are collected during the period between Feb. 2001 and April, 2001 through survey method from the 80 permanent colostomy patients undergoing treatment in Seoul area hospital. Various statistical analysis including Frequency Distribution, Pearson Correlation, Multiple Regression, Principle Component Analysis are performed using SPSS 10.0 for Windows Findings are summarized as follows; First, the highest satisfaction are - shown in the area of ¡¯family & relative relationship¡¯ whereas the lowest are reported 10 the area of ¡¯physical & functional health¡¯ or ¡¯social life & recreation.¡¯ Also¡¯ sexual function¡¯ area of the patient are reported as the most inconvenient of concern and the least are reported in the areas of r side effects of the combined treatments after operation Second, 10 general, there are statistically significant, but negative correlation ships between disease-related elements and life satisfaction. Third, instrument for life satisfaction scale is reclassified into three different areas after performing Principle Component Analysis. These are environmental & interactional area, individual area, and supporting resource area, which can be explainable up to 68.010%. Lastly, implications for social work intervention and future research are discussed.
